Rent a Sailboat in Malta Without Skipper

Sailboat Hire in Malta Without Skipper

Visitors have been coming to Malta for centuries, the history of Malta and the surrounding islands can be traced back for at least 7,000 years! But, regardless of how the island has changed and technology has developed, there is no better way of experiencing the magnificence of this island than from the sea.

Rent a sailboat in Malta without a skipper and you’re free to leave the capital city, Valletta and travel around the largest natural harbor in the Mediterranean. Looking back at the city you’ll instantly appreciate why it’s known as the ‘Fortress City’.

You’ll need a sailing license if you want to go without a skipper. But, if you have one, you’ll instantly feel like an explorer as you marvel at the sights around Malta, natural and man-made.

The climate in the summer is perfect for sailing. Temperatures can reach 30°C and light winds are common, allowing you to make plenty of headway.

If you head along the southern coast of Malta you’ll find the Blue Grotto, this is a series of sea caverns created by nature. The water is deep blue and you’ll find plenty of reasons to slide into the water and join the myriad of colorful fish. This is also a great spot to practice your sailing skills and really get used to the boat you’ve rented.

Movng around onto the western side of the island will allow you to visit Hagar Qim, it’s a megalithic temple complex and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. To put it simply, it’s impressive.

Coming back up the eastern side of Malta you’ll find the town of Paola and the Salfliene Hypogeum, the largest church on the Maltese Islands. It’s also the site of a pre-historic temple, the only one of its kind in the world! The temple eventually became a necropolis with over 7,000 remains being found there. But, only 60 visitors are allowed in each day, you’ll need to book in advance and plan your visit here.

Also on the southeastern coast is Marsaxlokk, you may have heard of the place as it is famous for the eyes painted on all the boats. This is an interesting place and a great opportunity to explore the village. If you are there on a Sunday the market is fantastic.

Moving on up the east coast, heading north, you’ll find St Paul’s Island, sat just off St Paul’s Bay. The island was named after St Paul he got shipwrecked here on the way back to Rome. It’s small and uninhabited but worth a look.

Cruise around the top of the island and in the Northwest you’ll find Mallieha Bay, a sun baked double cove which is perfect to unwind and soak up the sun. You’ll find plenty of cafes and bars here to help you enjoy the spot.

It’s also worth taking a look at Mellieha’s Popeye village, built as a film set in the 1970’s it is still intact and enchanting.

From here you can also sail across to Comino and even on around Gozo. It’s worth checking out where the Azure Window was on Gozo, the seabed is full of life around here.
