Frequently asked questions

Before booking

First Time?

If you are planning on embarking on your first Sailing vacation, we recommend you schedule an appointment with one of our Travel Consultants. We have a multilingual support team that is fluent in English, German, Italian, French and Spanish. They will provide a free service that will enable you to develop a deeper understanding of the exciting adventures waiting to be discovered on open waters.

How can my travel consultant help me?

Our Travel Consultants will offer you a 360° service. They will help you with searching for a boat, building your route alongside existing sailing itineraries. Most importantly, they will get the best available deal for your desired sailing vacation.

Which is the minimum charter duration?

For what concern the Mediterranean Area, the boat rental market usually operates from Saturday to Saturday, for a minimum charter duration of one week. During the low season (from October to May) we can arrange any kind of trip you may desire: 1) a long weekend on board 2) simply a break during the week. However, during the high season (from May till October) it is unlikely that the boat provider (charter company) will have the availability to a charter that does not fall within the Saturday to Saturday period. On the other hand, outside the Mediterranean area, charter companies are flexible upon the duration and start dates.

What should my itinerary be?

The itinerary will be one of the most important elements of your sailing vacation. It is not fixed (already organized) but up to every client and his crew. It can be organized or modified day by day (also with the help of the skipper) considering sailing area and weather conditions. Our Travel Consultants will be happy to send you examples of the best sailing itineraries with some tips for the sailing week. Various itineraries can depend on the sailing area, weather conditions, boat type, crew, etc. Please bear in mind that if not differently mentioned on the boat page, all the charters are round trips, which means that the embarkation and disembarkation will take place in the same marina. In case you're interested in a one way instead, please contact our Travel Consultants.

How big does my boat need to be?

If you are sailing as a couple, with just you and your partner, any boat over 30 feet will suffice. In any case, you will need at least two cabins: one for the pair of you and one for an eventual skipper. For groups up to 12 people (the general passenger limit for chartered yachts), you will need a boat with three to five cabins. If you need a skipper, remember to include an extra passenger in your search. Bear in mind that it is recommended the skippers has his/her own cabin. The berths indicated on the Boat Page are the total number of people allowed on board during the night, so in that number are included also an eventual skipper, hostess, etc...

Boat layout

The boat is like a second home, of course adapted to the sea. On board you will find everything that is essential to enjoy your sailing vacation. The internal configuration consists of cabins, bathrooms and a shared space called "dinette" or "saloon" where you will have also the kitchen. The cabins can have multiple dimensions and configurations (double bed, bunk bed, single bed, three bed cabins, etc.) as it goes for the bathroom (with or without shower, etc.). Some saloons can be convertible, meaning that they can be transformed in a single or double bed. Usually in the saloon there is also a space for the nautical charts and tools for the skipper's use. (for example VHF radio, GPS, wind instruments, etc.) NB Not all of the single cabins are big enough to accomodate adult persons, so in case necessary, please check the size specs with our Travel Consultants.

Do I need a sailing license to rent a boat?

You can either rent a yacht with or without a skipper. If you have a sailing license you can skipper the boat by yourself, otherwise a skipper is mandatory.

Which kind of sailing licenses are accepted?

Each country has its own rules, so it depends on the sailing area you are going to choose for your sailing holiday. Please bear in mind that a valid sailing licence is exclusive responsibility of every customer, as per any other personal document. Each customer must look into which sailing licenses are accepted in the chosen sailing area before booking and/or embarkation. In any case, all our Travel Consultants are always available to check with the boat provider (charter company) if your sailing license is valid in the country and for the boat you would like to rent.

How much does it cost to rent a boat?

The prices are set by the boat providers (charter companies) and depends on several factors such as boat type, sailing destination, duration of the vacation and season. Also, it is important that you take into consideration the price of the mandatory extras and compulsory security deposit.

What is not included in the price?

The price doesn't include extras (they can be compulsory or optional and in both cases are always mentioned in the Sailogy's boat page), fuel, food (provisioning), transfer from/to the base, port taxes and fees, tourist taxes, mooring fees, skipper or hostess food provisioning during the week etc...

What are the extras?

The extras, that are all offered by the boat provider (charter companies), are divided in two categories: mandatory (compulsory or obligatory) and optional. The extras are different and depend on various parameters (sailing area, boat provider, boat type, etc.) The mandatory extra may include Charter Package/Transit Log, which normally consists of Final Cleaning, Bed linen, and others. In the Mediterranean area for example, the final cleaning of the boat is always mandatory. Please make sure to check exactly what each extra includes so that you can add any other extra you may need (for example an outboard engine for your dinghy, water toys etc.). You will be able to find the list directly on your Vacation Page.

Do i need a skipper?

It depends on a variety of factors: your sailing licence, your sailing experience, your crew, boat type or sailing area, etc. It is a demanding job, so if your goal is to take a proper vacation, you will probably wish to let someone else be the skipper. Remember during the sailing trip, skippers do not just navigate, they are fully responsible for the boat and for passenger's safety. The skipper onboard is like a captain of the ship: his word is final for the entire duration of the sailing.

How much does it cost to hire a skipper?

Hiring a skipper has a cost that varies according to the boat provider, the area, the boat size, and its type. Usually, prices start from 150€ per day, and this quote does not include the food provisioning during the week. The skipper is usually paid in cash directly at the base on the departure day, but please check the payment method on the boat page, since some skippers are to be paid online in advance.

Skipper necessities

The price for the skipper service doesn't include the food supply, which must be agreed with the skipper upon embarkation. Usually the skipper and the client make the grocery shopping together in order to decide the necessary supply during the sailing trip. Every skipper needs his own cabin. Sometimes it's possible that a skipper demands an already fixed fee for his provisioning (for example 30€ per day). The skipper's job is really demanding, so cooperation is essential if requested (to moor, or during sailing maneuvers, etc... ) Please note that the skipper service is not provided by our company, but it can be offered by the boat providers (charter companies) and/or skipper agencies.

Professional crew on board

Apart from the Skipper service, you may want to request the service of other professionals on board: the hostess, the cook, and the deckhand. The hostess duties are to clean the common areas and prepare light meals. In case there are different needs please make sure to communicate them to our Travel Consultants. The cook will be there for your everyday meals and keep the kitchen tidy. In case you need this service please make sure to contact him/her before your embarkation for your provisioning arrangements. Please keep in mind that every professional crewmember must be included in your provisioning planning, and must be provided with his/her own cabin. All these professional crew services are to be paid extra, either in cash upon embarkation, or online in advance.

Before boarding

What is the security deposit?

All our boats are part of fleets of professional charter companies, therefore they all are insured. The deposit represents the insurance excess of the boat itself. This covers any accidental damage caused by you or your fellow passengers and aims to ensure that all the contractual obligations are met. (e.g. at the checkout when you return the boat to the marina). It is given to the charter company at the base before embarkation and is returned in whole at the end of the trip after the boat has been inspected and there is no damage. In some cases, the amount can be requested via online secure payment link a few days before the embarkation date. Should this be the case our Travel Consultants will keep you informed. The security deposit covers only the damage done to the boat booked by the customer, any damage done on the ancillaries (outboard engine, dinghy,...) or third parties, will be calculated separately

Can i insure the security deposit?

Yes, of course! In case you don't have your trusted insurance consultant, you will have the possibility to add an insurance coverage on the security deposit through a reliable insurance company with whome we are cooperating for many years. Please keep in mind that you will have nevertheless to leave the security deposit at the base upon embarkation to the charter company, and afterwards in case of proven damage, the insurance will cover the cost.

What is the damage waiver?

The Damage Waiver is an extra provided by the charter company, which upon a payment of a non-refundable fee reduces or eliminates the standard security deposit amount. You can always check on the site or ask our Travel Consultants if the charter company offers this kind of service

When is the embarkation and disembarkation time?

The check-in, especially in the Mediterranean Sea, usually takes place in the late afternoon on Saturday (embarkation day) at the base. You will have to return to the base on Friday evening, after refuelling the boat. This procedure not only allows the charter company to have enough time to inspect the boat before returning you the deposit paid, but also gives you the possibility to be present during the check-out process and verify with the base manager that everything is in order. After the check-out, you will be able to leave the boat or spend the last night on board and disembark on Saturday morning. In other destinations, where there is more flexibility about the embarkation/disembarkation day and the charter duration (for example in the Caribbean Sea), the check-in is usually around noon. This information will be available on your booking voucher

Do i need to submit any documents before the embarkation?

All documents must be submitted online before the departure date. The deadline to fill out the online crewlist will be specified on your vacation page. Please keep in mind that for bareboat charters (without skipper) the sailing licence and the VHF certificate must be always uploaded. NB Valid documentation is exclusive responsibility of every customer.

Can i sail everywhere?

If you are the skipper of the boat, it depends on your sailing license. For instance, with or without skipper, there may be sailing areas protected that are not accessible or accessible only after paying an entrance fee (For example, the Kornati National Park in Croatia or the Maddalena Park in Sardinia). Regarding sailing in international waters, for both sailing licence and entrance fees, always ask our Travel Consultants for additional information. NB Sailing during the night hours is prohibited mainly for security reasons and potential damage done during that period is not covered by the insurance policies, as mentioned in the contracts signed at the base.

What should i pack for my sailing holiday?

It depends on where you're going and what season it is. In the Mediterranean during the summer months, you will be dressing for very warm weather, and will most likely be spending most of the day in a bathing suit, sunscreen - and not much else. Evenings can get cooler or windy, so you will want to make sure you have some warm layers. Surely we hope that every day will be as sunny as possible, but we recommend to pack also a raincoat in case of bad weather. Sailing holidays involve exploring the onshore attractions. If shopping, drinks, dining and dancing are on your list of things to do, this is the time to show off your summer wardrobe. Keep in mind that space is very limited on boats, so we recommend packing as little as possible. Soft bags are strongly recommended as hard-side luggage generally doesn't fit in the storage space of the boat.

What is provisioning?

In the nautical sector, the provisioning is the grocery shopping you can bring on board during your sailing trip. You can either buy your food in the supermarkets near the marina or request the boat provider (charter company) if they offer the provisioning service. Please keep in mind that in case you will have a skipper or crew on board, the provisioning list should be agreed together in advance. Since the skipper/crew will be on board with you for the whole charter period, it's recommended to ask to the skipper/crew if there are any allergy or preferences.

How can i bring my luggage to the boat?

The majority of the embarkation marinas are provided with a car parking space, that can be used for your vehicle or for the taxi. To reach the boat with your luggage you can always ask the base staff if there are any trolleys available.

What about my gadgets?

If you need to bring with you some of your electric devices, we suggest to always check that your boat has an inverter on board. An inverter works when the engine is on, which means that you and your crew can recharge your phones for a few hours a day. Should you need a longer amount of charging time, maybe an on board generator is the best choice for your trip. If you choose a boat with neither a generator nor inverter, the 220W outlet will only work when you are moored at the dock. Keep in mind that once in the middle of the clear, blue Mediterranean Sea, you may not have cell phone coverage, but the majority of boat providers (charter companies) offer a Wi-Fi service on board as an extra. NB It is advisable to moor at a marina at least once per week to recharge properly the boat batteries and provide all the necessary you may need.

On board

What happens at the check in?

Upon arrival at the marina, we always suggest to call the base manager (contacts to be found in your Boarding Pass), so that he/she can bring you to your boat and assist you with your embarkation. If you requested a skipper service, you will find your skipper at the base as well. Also in this case, we suggest to call him/her beforehand, so that you can make sure that he/she is also present for the check-in procedure alongised with the booking owner. Remember to check that the boat has all the features and extras agreed in the contract. Also, check that the safety equipment is complete and that everything is in working order. After this, you will sign the charter contract and you are ready to set off.

Can I dock anywhere in the harbour?

Our suggestion is to always contact the Marina for a mooring place. In fact, the marina offices will be able to inform you about the availability, pricing and additional information pertaining to the services they provide (for example water, electricity, etc.).

How much does it cost to moor?

The price varies according to the sailing area, the boat size and the season. Usually, it is a fee calculated per night. Please also consider that electricity is not always included in the mooring fee.

Where do I fill my water and fuel tanks?

Water and fuel tanks can be filled at the harbours. The cost of refilling water is usually included in the mooring fee. Please consider that 4 people require about 600 liters of water for 7 days at sea, so plan your trip accordingly! The cost of the fuel is not included in the charter price or mooring fees you'll pay during the week. Fuel prices change every month or season and the fuel consumption during the week depends on how much you will use the engine. It is very difficult to consume the whole fuel tank during one week charter since most of the time you will be able to use sails! However, the boat will be given to you with full fuel and has to be back at the base with full fuel after your charter period. You will therefore pay just for the fuel amount you have consumed. Please remember that a boat engine is like a car engine: each one may need a different type of fuel. Remember to check it!

Where can I empty waste water tanks?

Waste water tanks can be cleaned at the marina. Emptying the tanks in inland waters is prohibited!

What should I do if there is something wrong with the boat?

Before your departure, you will be able to download your Boarding Pass from your Vacation Page, where all the necessary contacts that you may need while on board will be listed. If something goes wrong while navigating, please call the emergency contact using the VHF channel or call the Base Manager. They will intervene as soon as possible.

Are any items prohibited on the boats?

Weapons, explosives including fireworks as well as narcotics are strictly forbidden on board. If in doubt contact us and we will confirm whether it is permitted to bring whatever you may need on board. Please keep in mind that the boat provider (charter company) reserves the right to determine what is and is not allowed on board.

What happens upon disembarkation?

Once you come back to the marina a check-out procedure will take place. The boat will be checked and there will be a divers inspection. You will be present during the whole process and the Base Manager will request you to sign the final check-out paper. It usually consists of an inventory check-list and an observation space for notes or claims.

Good to Know

How do Sailogy Promotions work?

Sailogy promotions cannot be combined with credit notes and vouchers that the customer already has and cannot be combined with each other. To redeem your promotional code you can enter it in the dedicated space during the online booking or alternatively notify your travel consultant.

What is the difference between a charter agency and a charter company?

The Charter Agency is a broker that proposes the boats of the Charter Companies and guides the client in the pre-boarding phase. The Charter Company is the provider of the boats and the responsible authority during the sailing trip, which is regulated by a separated contract signed at the base.

What can i do when i'm anchored in a bay?

If you choose not to moor at a marina, you can enjoy the natural amenities of the bay you're anchored in. In certain cases, there are some restaurants that are linked to bay's buoys, which are only reachable by dinghy. Please keep in mind that even if you're not moored in a marina, in some sailing areas or natural parks there is a fee to pay for the buoy.

Can i bring my pet on board?

Our small friends are welcome on the majority of the boats, but please always check in advance the possibility to bring them on board, since not all charter companies allow it. In case it would be possible to bring your pet with you on a sailing cruise, the charter company will ask for an additional cleaning fee.
