  4. Skipper & Hostess: The Ultimate Sailing Holiday Upgrade

Planning a sailing holiday is all about freedom, adventure, and relaxation. But what if you want to enjoy the experience without worrying about navigation, cooking, or keeping things tidy? That’s where having a skipper and hostess onboard makes all the difference.

Not sure if you need one (or both)? Let’s break it down.

The Skipper: Your Expert Navigator & Guide

A skipper isn’t just the person who steers the boat—think of them as your personal captain and local expert, ensuring your trip is safe, smooth, and unforgettable. Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced sailor who just wants to relax, having a skipper onboard means you don’t have to worry about routes, weather, or tricky manoeuvres like anchoring and docking.

What does the skipper do?

  • Navigates and sails the boat – They plan the best routes based on weather and your preferences.

  • Handles mooring and anchoring – No stress about parking the boat in a busy marina or finding the perfect bay.

  • Ensures safety onboard – They check the engine, sails, and general condition of the boat throughout the trip.

  • Problem-solving – If something needs fixing, they handle it or coordinate repairs.

What they don’t do

  • Cook or clean inside the boat.

  • Give daily sailing lessons (unless arranged in advance).

  • Handle grocery shopping or meal preparation.

Most skippers are not just highly skilled sailors, but also great travel companions. They know the best swimming spots, hidden coves, and fantastic seaside restaurants. Plus, they’re used to all kinds of travellers—whether you’re a laid-back sun-seeker or an adventure junkie.

The Hostess: Making Your Life Easier

If you want to kick back and relax, a hostess is your best friend onboard. She’s in charge of keeping things tidy, organised, and comfortable, and she’ll also help with light meal preparation.

What does the hostess do?

  • Prepares breakfast & light lunches – Wake up to fresh coffee and fruit without lifting a finger.

  • Keeps the boat clean & tidy – No messy kitchen, no overflowing trash.

  • Handles grocery shopping – She makes sure the boat is stocked with everything you need.

  • Assists with drinks & snacks – Whether it’s a refreshing juice or a sunset cocktail, she’s happy to help.

What she doesn’t do

  • Prepare elaborate dinners or gourmet meals.

  • Clean cabins without the guest’s approval.

  • Provide full-time babysitting services.

A hostess is not a private chef or housekeeper, but she takes care of the little things that make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

What Are Our Responsibilities When You Book a Skipper or Hostess?

We don’t just provide a crew—we ensure everything is set up before you even arrive. Here’s how we help:

If you book a skipper

  • We arrange for a licensed, experienced skipper to be onboard and ready for your trip.

  • We provide them with all the details about your boat and itinerary before your arrival.

  • We ensure they have their own private cabin (on bareboat charters).

  • We communicate any special requests in advance (e.g., a skipper with local knowledge or specific language skills).

Your responsibility:

  • As the host, you are in charge of providing meals for the skipper throughout the trip.

  • Any requests for additional duties (e.g., sailing lessons) should be discussed before booking.

If you book a hostess

  • We carefully select a professional hostess who fits your needs.

  • We communicate with her about dietary preferences, guest requests, and any extra details before your trip.

  • We ensure she has a private cabin (if required) and arrives in time for check-in.

Your responsibility:

  • Meal planning should be discussed with the hostess before the trip.

  • The hostess can assist with light cooking, but she is not a chef—so gourmet meals are not included.

Why You’ll Love Having a Skipper & Hostess

Many travellers book a boat expecting a "do-it-yourself" adventure, only to realize how much work goes into handling a yacht. A skipper and hostess take away the stress, so you can truly enjoy your time at sea.

  • More Relaxation – Instead of worrying about sailing, cooking, or cleaning, you get to just enjoy the ride.

  • Local Knowledge – They might know the best places to visit, the safest routes, and the top dining spots.

  • A Seamless Experience – Everything is taken care of, from food prep to navigation, so all you have to do is enjoy.

If you want a sailing holiday that’s equal parts adventure and luxury, having a professional crew onboard is a game-changer. Whether you choose just a skipper or go for the full experience with a hostess too, you’ll never want to sail any other way again.
