  4. Amalfi Coast by boat: what to see and what to eat

Also known as the Divine Coast, the Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coast of about fifty kilometers that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea, precisely the Gulf of Salerno: it is bounded to the west by Positano and to the east by Vietri sul Mare and is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Coast can be visited by land or by sea, with the latter being the best way to experience a unique holiday, admiring from an exclusive perspective a constantly-changing landscape, made of small villages and high cliffs, hopping from sea, sun, history, art, gastronomy, and nightlife.

Exploring the Amalfi Coast by boat is an experience that differs in many ways from a trip by land. The exclusivity of being able to admire harbours, coves, and small towns from a unique point of view, will keep you away from the crowds of tourists that flock to these areas each year. On board your boat, lulled by the waves, you can fully soak in the panoramas of coves and inlets alternating with larger beaches, and enchanting valleys cultivated with vines, citrus, and olive trees.

Sixteen is the number of municipalities in the Amalfi Coast, all jewels that are so worth a visit: Amalfi, Atrani, Cava de' Tirreni, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Raito, Ravello, Sant'Egidio del Monte Albino, Scala, Tramonti and Vietri sul Mare.

In this article, we'll discover the best places to visit on the Coast, as well as the top locations to explore by boat and the unmissable and delicious food.

Best places to visit on Amalfi Coast

As we already mentioned, all of the Amalfi Coast's towns are worth a visit, because each has its own architecture, natural beauties, and delicacies to try. But if you are short on time, we strongly suggest paying a visit to the main gems, Positano and Amalfi. The two colored villages nestled in the mountain look like a real nativity, and create a magical atmosphere that inebriates the streets full of shops and boutiques; however, the beauty of these landscapes can be fully appreciated only from a boat.

Other locations not to miss are Ravello, also known as the town of music for the presence of the renowned Oscar Niemeyer auditorium, and where you can admire a beautiful view from the Infinity Terrace in Villa Cimbrone; Vietri sul Mare, filled with colorful streets full of ceramics made by local artisans; Cetara, a fisherman town nestled in a small inlet overlooked by an old tower. The renowned islands of Capri and Ischia can also be easily reached by boat, don't miss the unique opportunity to swim in their exclusive bays!

When to visit the Amalfi Coast?

Being a perfect location for a sailing holiday, the best moment of the year to visit the Coast would be summer. However, this is also the period when throngs of tourists crowd every corner of the Coast, when prices are at their highest, and the weather at its hottest.

If you can choose your own timing, why not try different months such as April, May, or October? These are all valid alternatives for visiting the Coast when the weather is mild, the crowds of tourists are less intense, and the higher boat availability allows for better prices and deals. Your wallet will thank you!

Best places in the Amalfi Coast to visit by boat

Besides the beautiful and picturesque towns of the Amalfi Coast, the best part of owning a private boat here is to be able to explore coves, grottos, and secret beaches by yourself, reaching remote spots that are usually not very crowded because hard to reach from the mainland.

A skipper can undoubtedly advise on many secret spots, but if you are bareboating, here's a useful list of the best places to visit by boat:

- Baia del Cavallo Morto, Maiori: It literally translates into "Dead Horse Bay" but despite the name, is a beautiful remote cove with turquoise waters.

- Emerald Grotto, Conca dei Marini: a beautiful grotto with emerald light games that can be easily reached with a dinghy or by swimming.

- Fiordo di Furore, Furore: a beach created at the mouth of a fjord and with a unique landscape.

- Li Galli island: Legend has it that this is where Ulysses met the Sirens.

What to eat in Amalfi Coast

The delicacies of the Amalfi Coast are renowned worldwide, and people from all over the world get there just to indulge in the amazing and flavoring food. From the unique pizza to buffalo mozzarella, to wines and limoncello: basically, everything our daily diet should consist of, are we right?

If you wish to try something different, we put together a short list of less-famous dishes that are equally delicious, so that you can either pretend you are a local or just indulge in new, yummy flavors of Italy. The names are probably quite hard to pronounce for you, but it's definitely worth the effort!

Ndunderi

Ndunderi is a type of pasta, typical of the city of Minori, with a shape similar to gnocchi. However, they are bigger and their shape can vary from piece to piece, making you focus more on the flavours rather than the aesthetics. They're great with a basil-infused sauce!

Scialatielli all'Amalfitana

Another tasty main course is Scialatielli, a typical pasta of the Amalfi Coast, similar to linguine but thicker and more porous, for a great sauce grip! One of the most famous dishes with Scialatielli is all'Amalfitana, with anchovies, lemon zest, and mozzarella fiordilatte: a unique combination of flavors that will make your tastebud dance!

Minestra Maritata

Probably more suitable for colder days, the minestra maritata (literally "married soup"), is a tasty soup made of vegetables and meat, with kale and pork as the main ingredients. These ingredients combine perfectly into a unique dish that will surely warm your heart.
