Dufour Yachts is one of the most influential French series-production yards in modern cruising sailboats. Today, the brand stands for a contemporary take on the cruising yacht: generous, highly usable deck space, bright interiors, flexible layouts—and a clear focus on making yachts feel simple, safe and “holiday-ready” in everyday use.
The Dufour story begins with engineer and sailor Michel Dufour, who discovered the potential of polyester in 1957 and developed an idea that would help reshape yacht building: robust and affordable GRP series yachts. In 1964, he started designing the transportable “Sylphe” under the company name Le Stratifié Industriel—a milestone widely seen as the origin of the Dufour brand.
In the 1990s, Dufour pushed a concept that now feels completely standard: “ready-to-sail”. In the official yard history, the Classic range introduced in 1994 is described as a “fully equipped” yacht line that put comfort and smart details more firmly in the spotlight.
Dufour is based in La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast and has been majority-owned by the Fountaine Pajot Group since 2018. Dufour describes this period as a “new stage” for the brand—with the aim of sharpening quality and design further, without losing the essential Dufour identity.
A recurring theme across the current range is “life outside”: generous cockpits, wide aft sections and clean, safe deck circulation. The Dufour 48 communicates this focus particularly strongly, extending the cockpit into a true lounge and dining space.
Dufour often turns the aft platform into more than a swim step. On the Dufour 48, the yard explicitly speaks of a “genuine outdoor galley”, including a plancha/grill and working area—perfect for social cooking onboard.
A striking trend is the additional lounge zone in the bow, communicated by Dufour as a second cockpit. This creates real onboard “zones”—quieter forward, more social aft—making the boat feel larger and more flexible.
Large hull windows, plenty of deck hatches and modular interior options are part of the modern Dufour signature. The "facelift" approach on newer models supports a bright, airy interior through increased glazing.
Dufour yachts are typically designed as comfort-oriented yet lively cruisers. Press testing highlights include:
